Diabetes UK Brighton Walk in the Park

Check out our full gallery of photos from the day!

On Sunday 20th May, a crowd of over 100 people descended upon Preston Park, Brighton, to support Diabetes UK's annual Walk in the Park fundraiser. It was the first time Brighton had staged the event and walkers came from all over the city, and from as far afield as Ashford, Worthing and Hailsham to raise both money for vital diabetes research and awareness into the condition.

Our prayers for the rain to hold off were thankfully answered and we were blessed with several hours of glorious sunshine - a huge concern after the string of bad weather we'd had - which undoubtedly raised people's spirits even higher! After some confusion over the start time and place, walkers set off in their droves at 12pm to complete the first lap in a team before separating into their individual groups for subsequent times around the course.

Marshals Chris Kift, Andy Normansell, Ian Scott, Colette Walsh, Francis Mutungira, Mandy Howes and Sandra Dooley dotted themselves around the route and made sure everyone stayed on track and added a bit more friendly cheer to the event. The group had received several requests for Diabetes UK t-shirts to be made available; these quickly sold out and added further identity to walkers and their purpose for attending.

A well-earned rest followed and families and friends came together with picnics and took photographs to mark the occasion. Medals were presented to all those who completed the walk, much to the delight of many of the young walkers (and some of the older ones too!). A trip to the Cirque Surreal's penultimate performance topped the day off in style (even moreso as our tickets were half-price!) as several of the walkers attended their matinee show and gasped at the death-defying stunts and laughed at the slapstick comedy.

We would like to thank everyone who came along and took part in the walk, as well as those who helped set up and of course Rita and Jess from St. John's Ambulance, who were on call at the park in case we needed them (thankfully, the day went without a hitch and we didn't!). Sponsorship must be with Alex by the end of July, so get collecting if you haven't already done so - we'll update with the grand total on the main page as and when we receive the money!

See you again next year!
