On Tuesday 13th March, the Brighton Voluntary Group presented a talk held at The New Madeira Hotel, by a man who was fortunate enough to become the very first 'insulin independent' Type 1 diabetic. Richard Lane had three islet-cell transplants back in 2005 and, after the third, was able to come off insulin injections for a whole year. It also meant that terrible hypos he was experiencing were stopped altogether.

Richard's tale presents all diabetics with a terrific ray of hope, as many are calling this pioneering therapy 'the first signs of a cure'. To read Richard's full story click here.

85 people piled into The New Madeira Hotel to hear Richard's truly inspirational story. He stayed around for a question-and-answer session at the end of the talk and later presented Neil Waugh from The New Madeira Hotel and Wendy Maplesdon from Roche with appreciation certificates, to thank them for their support over the past year. The group would like to thank Richard, Neil and Wendy for attending and the continuing work they do to support us.
Thanks also to Sue Marshall from Desang for the photos and the transcription of Richard's story.
