Diabetes UK Brighton Voluntary Group at Brighton Pride 2007
The Brighton Voluntary Group put in an appearance among various other local organisations and charities at this year's Community Village at the annual Brighton & Hove Pride Festival in Preston Park, Brighton on Saturday 4th August. As Chairman Alex Hawkey was painted silver for a Wizard-of-Oz-themed float (as the Tin Man, no less!), it was down to Secretary and Treasurer Ian Scott and a horde of supporters to ensure the day went without a hitch! It is estimated that around 150,000 flocked from far and wide to attend this year's celebrations on one of the most gloriously sunny days of 2007. As the rays illuminated the park and the colourful revellers flitted from stall to stall, Ian and a team of friendly volunteers erected an equally as colourful awareness stand and soon the crowds came pouring in.
John Impett, Heather Jackson, Michelle Brind, Helen Croucher, Shelley Rahman, Nick Aitchison and John and Monica Trussler helped distribute leaflets and make contact with around 1000 people over the day, with 20+ new people added to the distribution list, who were previously unaware about the group. We would like to welcome those new to the group to our next meeting in September and thank everyone who helped out at the stall. Bring on next year and - hopefully - more sunshine!
