2nd Visit to Diabetes Research Lab at Brighton University

L to R. Edward (Researcher) Michelle (Researcher) Dr Claire Marriott, Sandeep (Researcher) Dr Wendy Macfarlane and James (Researcher)

On Friday 11th June, 15 group members and family members enjoyed a visit to the Lab. Dr Claire Marriott and Dr Wendy MacFarlane together with researchers Michelle, Edward, James and Sandeep made us all very welcome.  We were shown around the Tissue Culture Suite, where Michelle demonstrated the work she is doing. Edward and James then explained the Molecular Biology Research Lab and then Sandeep showed us the Image and Analysis Unit.

It was fascinating to see ‘live’ tissue cells and cultures being ‘grown’ in platforms in 3D.

Edward extracting live cells in the Molecular Biology Lab

Images enlarged by up to 1 million million times were on view in the Image and Analysis Unit

Tenpin Bowling Evening

People BowlingOn Tuesday 19th April, a varied band of 18 people attended Bowlplex at Brighton Marina on a lovely spring evening. With 4 lanes, it was brilliant value for only £2 each (thanks to a subsidy from the group & the venue). In retrospect, at that price we maybe should have had more than one game! Although not a competition, we think 127 may have been the highest score (Jim Mann, committee member) – unless anybody else knows different. Afterwards a few adjourned to a local pub (of which there was a good choice) and others commented that they were surprised we didn’t hold more bowling events, as they were so much fun – a point noted by the committee members that attended.

Quiz afternoon

On Saturday 16th April, Ian, Tony and Heather from the committee attended an afternoon quiz hosted by the Parkinson’s Society at Bishop Hannington Church in Hove.  Ian provided a bank of questions on classical music (with pre-prepared soundtrack) and there were equally challenging questions around the Eurovision Song contest and more popular music.  It was quite uplifting to meet such a lively and pleasant group of people, despite their debilitating condition.  Some of them also had diabetes!  There was raffle and refreshments. They have a really good committee, essential to keep these groups alive.
