Global Diabetes Awareness Walk Launch @ Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Saturdays - first day of the weekend? Recovering from the night before? Shopping? Or football? So many choices - but on Saturday 22nd September 2007, we chose the latter as Brighton & Hove Albion FC helped the Brighton Diabetes Voluntary & Support Group to launch a global awareness campaign that will fully hit its stride later this year to mark World Diabetes Day on November 14th.

50 people from in and around the Brighton & Hove area attended the match, which sadly saw Brighton & Hove Albion beaten by Yeovil Town 2-1, and walked around the pitch at half-time as the event commentator explained the reasons for doing so. Flags of eight different countries from around the world - USA, South Africa, Sweden, Pakistan, Brazil, Ireland, Spain and Italy - were carried to highlight the international theme of the afternoon.

We were joined by Gary Abram, organiser of the Global Walk 2007, who led the procession, alongside Dr Shankar Kanumakala, Consultant in Paediatric Diabetes, and Sister Caroline Spence, Diabetes Nurse from The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton.

The Albion have very kindly provided us with the opportunity to have some group photos taken with their players on World Diabetes Day, on Wednesday November 14th. We would like to get as many people along to this as possible, as we hope to be able to use the photos in the local press to publicise the Global Walk, which will take place the following weekend. Please contact us if you would like to attend.

We would like to thank all of the families who attended the game and joined us in the walk around the pitch. We hope you would like to join us again for more activities in the near future! Also, huge thanks go to Teresa Sanders for providing us with the opportunity and Lisa Radley for putting us in touch with Brighton & Hove Albion.
